THE FUTURE
POWER SYSTEM OF
GOLDEN DOME

The Future Power System of Golden Dome

The Golden Dome for America Program, seeking a new Theater Based Ground Radar (TBGR) to enhance missile defense capabilities, has specified PD Power Systems’ 900kW Deployable Power Generation and Distribution System (DPGDS) MEP-PU-810D as the prime power source.

The DPGDS MEP-PU-810D, expandable to 1800kW (two units with interface connectivity) is currently supporting the Missile Defense Agency’s (MDA) following systems:

  • AN/TPY-2 (Army/Navy Transportable Radar Surveillance forward base mode system)
  • THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense ballistic missile defense system)
  • LTAMDS (Lower Tier Air and Missile Defense Sensor)

The MEP-PU-810D is also the 249th Engineer Battalion (Prime Power)/FEMA and Force Provider Expeditionary source for power.

The MEP-PU-810 Direct Connect (DC) unit is engineered and built to meet or exceed the U.S. Army’s programs’ requirements, i.e. MDA, and other current and future Army power needs, providing unique and specialized power characteristics. DPGDS DC units are another addition to the DPGDS family of products with innovative design and end-to-end provisioning for complete support throughout the life cycle of the product.

  • Railroad Certified (passed the rail impact test)
  • Equipped with NGR – Neutral Ground Resistor bank
  • Shelter Isolation Switch – manual switch that isolates the power output
  • Intuitive and operator friendly touch screen panel
  • Integrated-field replaceable, HEMP filter for Low Voltage and DC signal lines
  • 100% backward compatibility to power critical infrastructure assets

PD Power Systems’ MEP-PU-810DC power unit consists of a two-axle chassis, equipped with air actuated brakes, a 5th wheel kingpin hitch, and is compliant for the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) transport at highway speeds (up to 55mph), towed by tractor/trailer vehicles.

Testing and Validation

The unit has completed rigorous testing and validation at Aberdeen Testing Center (ATC), McKinley Climatic Labs at Eglin AFB and White Sands Missile Range:

  • 750 hours Mean Time Between Essential Function Failure (MTBEFF) with an 80% lower confidence limit
  • Rating: 900kW ISO 8528-1 at JP-8 and 4,000 ft.
  • Operating temperature range: -50F to 135F
  • Certified for air transport on U.S. Air Force C-5 and C-17 aircraft
  • EMC RE and SE per MIL-STD-461F
  • Power quality IAW MIL-STD-1332 Utility Class

1.0MW Large Tactical Power Plant

(1.0MW P-GDPS Large Tactical Power Plant)

The PD Power Systems offers an alternative Golden Dome Power System (P-GDPS) that was developed to support the Lower Tier Air and Missile Defense Sensor (LTAMDS) program, which expands the battlespace for the Missile Segment Enhancement interceptor and is the lower tier sensor component of the U.S. Army’s Integrated Air and Missile Defense.

The P-GDPS is a modernized power plant that provides more mobile, reliable, and logistically supportable tactical electric power sources for the Department of Defense’s 21st century digitized forces. It has a dual 500kW generator in a power plant configuration with distribution and switching to allow a single generator to be on while the other is on standby.
